Son y No Son, founded in Austin, TX, in 1999, is a favorite of the local Austin music scene, playing their eclectic and innovative renditions of the classic repertoire of Cuban son, Colombian cumbia and Mexican bolero and ranchera. This exciting and passionate Afro-Latin music ensemble is led by vocalist, conguero and bongocero Rey Arteaga, who has co-founded or played in some of the best Latin bands in Austin over the last twenty years (La Tribu, Son Yuma, Centzontle, Melecumbe, Sarah Fox and Joel Guzman, Charanga Cakewalk), and comprised of some of the most talented and experienced musicians in Austin, with Russell Scanlon on lead guitar (Susanna Sharpe and Samba Police, Tamasha Africana , The Crying Monkeys), Glenn Rexach on guitar and bass (Glenn Rexach Group, Round Trip, La Tribu, Ta Mere), Jean Jacques "JJ" Barrera on bajo sexto (Johnny Degollado y Su Conjunto, Santiago Jimenez, Jr., Tailgators, Conjunto Aztlan), and Mary Harsh on bass.
